Description
The Carin' Clinic has board positions available for CPAs or Finance Professionals that would like to be part of a great safety-net pediatric clinic serving uninsured and underinsured children in Colorado. The member may be asked to become Treasurer when the current Treasurer's term ends.
See the website at CarinClinic.com. Started by Jefferson County School Nurses, the clinic has cared for thousands of children over the past thirty-three years.
Requirements
Board Member Responsibilities
General board members share fiduciary duty for the organization's mission, finances, and legal compliance. This includes attending regular board meetings typically quarterly, reviewing financial reports and asking informed questions, participating in strategic planning and policy development, and supporting fundraising efforts through personal giving and donor cultivation. Board members approve major decisions like budgets, executive compensation, and significant contracts or partnerships, ensure the organization operates according to its bylaws and maintains proper governance practices, and may serve on committees based on their expertise.
For a small clinic, board members often wear multiple hats - contributing professional expertise, community connections, or specific skills the organization needs. The ideal board composition balances clinical/healthcare knowledge, financial/legal expertise, fundraising capacity, and representation of the community served.
Treasurer Responsibilities
The treasurer serves as the board's financial steward, overseeing the organization's fiscal health and ensuring sound financial practices. Primary duties include reviewing financial statements and presenting them to the board in an understandable format, working with the controller to ensure accurate bookkeeping and timely financial reporting, and assisting with the annual budget development process. The treasurer monitors cash flow and reserve levels, ensures proper internal controls are in place to prevent fraud or mismanagement. The treasurer reviews and understands the organization's tax filings (Form 990), and ensures compliance with financial reporting requirements for grants and donors.
For a pediatric clinic specifically, the treasurer should understand healthcare reimbursement basics (Medicaid, private insurance, sliding fee scales) and help the board evaluate the sustainability of patient care operations versus grant funding dependency.
