As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Scientist to join our growing team. This role is contingent upon Lynker winning the contract, and an offer will likely not be extended until it is confirmed that the contract has been won.
NOAA created the Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) to improve operational weather and climate forecast systems through scientific and technical innovation via model co-development with the Weather Enterprise - government, industry and academia. EPIC will facilitate improved and reliable forecasts produced by numerical Earth system models that will reduce the devastating impacts of hazardous weather.
The EPIC Program and Contract will deliver world-class numerical weather prediction systems supporting NOAA's mission to save lives, protect property, and enhance the economy. EPIC is a facilitating organization that leverages resources to better coordinate the weather research and modeling community.
EPIC is a combination of (1) roadmap for research and model priorities, (2) development environment, (3) code management, (4) cloud-ready code, (5) observational data and tools, (6) community support, and (7) community engagement.
Responsibilities
Duties of the Chief Scientist for Earth Modeling Systems will include the following:
- Set EPIC's scientific and technical agenda in coordination with stakeholders.
- Oversee modeling methodology, innovation planning, research engagement, and technical deliverable review.
- Lead integration of advanced earth system and ML techniques into operational workflows.
- Represent EPIC to external scientific bodies and at stakeholder events.
- Oversee technical publication and knowledge transfer activities.
Qualifications
The Ideal Chief Scientist for Earth Systems Modeling will have the following:
- PhD in atmospheric, earth system, or computational sciences.
- 10+ years of industry experience.
- Renowned track record in NWP or large-scale modeling program leadership.
- Evidence of successful R2O2R and operational impact.
