LOCATION:
TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SECTION, JOINT ADMINISTRATION OFFICE, WHITTIER
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform and certify the results of specialized industrial hygiene, assessments and analyses.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general direction from the Environmental Health and Safety Supervisor, the incumbent:
- Conducts a variety of evaluations and recommends remedial measures for potentially hazardous conditions
- Plans, investigates and documents direct and indirect factors regarding industrial health and/or safety concerns, accidents or situations
- Plans and completes exposure monitoring of work activities in industrial facilities
- Confers with operating departments' managers and supervisors
- Documents findings of studies and prepares recommendations for management consideration
- Prepares reports in compliance with state and federal regulations related to industrial hygiene and/or safety
- Coordinates and conducts in-service testing and training at various work sites
- Performs related duties as required
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess ALL of the following:
A valid certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) -OR- have the ability to obtain the certification within 24 months of assignment -AND-
A valid California Class C driver license -AND-
A bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene or a closely related field from an accredited college with -AND-
Five (5) years of directly related, professional-level experience. A master's degree in a major directly affiliated with industrial hygiene may substitute for one year of experience.
Note: A Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) issued by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing is preferred. Applicants must be able to pass a medical evaluation to wear a respirator.
EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The competitive selection process may cover:
Knowledge of:
- Pertinent state and federal legislation and regulation
- Principles and practices of industrial hygiene in an industrial setting
- Research methods
Ability to:
- Implement technical and administrative aspects of a centralized industrial hygiene program
- Conduct exposure monitoring through sampling in industrial environments
- Collect and analyze technical data
- Maintain comprehensive reports
- Interact effectively with all levels of employees
- Develop and present employee training sessions
- Utilize computer software programs related to industrial hygiene analyses and records
SELECTION PROCESS:
- Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires will be reviewed and evaluated for relevant experience and/or coursework.
- Candidates considered to have the best qualifications will be invited to the written examination.
- The selection process will consist of a written test weighted 40% and an interview weighted 60%.
- The initial review of applications is expected to begin the week of February 23rd.
