INTEGRATED CARE FAMILY PSYCHOLOGY TRACK: Our program is a one-year APA accredited program. We will have two positions available for the upcoming academic year, start date August 1, 2026. Some trainees may wish to have additional training and with faculty agreement, remain for a second year.
Functional Neurologic Disorders (FND) Concentration:
One position within the Division of Collaborative Care and Wellness is available, with inpatient and outpatient clinical services conducted in the URMC Department of Neurology/Strong Memorial Hospital Epilepsy Center. Fellows can expect to receive specialized training in integrated care and family systems psychology, including medical family therapy, as well as the assessment and treatment of Functional Neurological Disorders and comorbid neurological and psychiatric conditions.
Fellows maintain a supervised clinical practice with emphasis on integrated care, health psychology, functional neurologic disorders, family systems, and intensive short term dynamic psychotherapy. This focus includes intensive clinical training in integrated care in a Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, housed in a large academic Neurology Department. There are many opportunities for collaborative care with physicians and other health professionals, interprofessional education, and teaching in a Neurology program that draws patients from all of upstate New York. The fellow serves a critical role in interdisciplinary team-based care.
Time is equally divided between an off-site outpatient clinic and the inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit at URMC's Strong Memorial Hospital. The fellow is trained to provide psychological diagnostic evaluations and psychotherapy to patients with functional neurological disorders, other somatoform disorders (e.g., non-epileptic seizures, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis). The fellow is also trained in intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), a framework developed by Habib Davanloo, MD. Other interventions that are utilized in the outpatient clinic include CBT, ACT, and family/couples' therapy.
Primary Care - Internal Medicine (PCIM) Concentration:
One position within the Division of Collaborative Care and Wellness is available. Specific training in this fellowship includes working with a diverse patient population at Strong Internal Medicine, a safety-net integrated primary care clinic that has been an accredited Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home since 2011. The fellow will spend 50% time treating a broad range of patientcare issues that present in primary care (depression, anxiety, grief, caregiver burden, adjustment to chronic disease, adherence issues, insomnia, family/relationship problems). The fellow will also spend approximately 50% time devoted to resident education via traditional didactic teaching and novel application of skills through clinical communication coaching.
For All Positions:
Fellows in both concentrations are also uniquely trained in the URMC Physician Communication Coaching model, preparing them to serve as consultants and educators to medical clinicians to enhance the patient-family-physician relationship.
Fellows participate in coursework and professional seminars dedicated to expanding knowledge base and skill development for primary/specialty care psychology and medical family therapy principles. The core values that guide our training program reflect our dedication to academic excellence, community connection, and appreciation of the unique contributions and lived experiences of every individual. Faculty and trainees are deeply committed to developing and maintaining awareness of their cultural lenses, and understanding the perceptions and perspectives of colleagues, trainees, and patients.
