Job Summary The Ophthalmic Technician 1 performs skilled duties related to the eye. This position assists the physician and is part of the health care team for ocular health. Essential Functions of the Role * Initiates and documents the patient's chief complaint, history of present illness, medical history, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings accurately. Follows compliance guidelines. * Performs testing including visual acuity measurement, lensometry, pupil function testing, ocular motility, tonometry, and confrontation visual field testing. Provides other patient services as requested by the ophthalmologist. * Performs refractometry; manual manifest refraction to draft preliminary glasses prescription. * Performs various specialty tests ordered by a physician, such as pachymetry, Brightness Acuity Test (BAT), Potential Acuity Meter (PAM), and color vision testing. * Assists with minor surgeries, intraocular injections, and laser treatments. Prepares patients for sterile procedures in exam or treatment rooms. * Educates patient regarding the administration of medications, and pre and post operative instructions, as directed by physician. * Handles specimens, biopsies and culture materials safely. * Administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications at the direction of a physician. * Opens and closes exam lanes. Ensures equipment is cleaned and disinfected. Makes sure battery-powered instruments are seated properly in recharge wells. Ensures lamps and projectors are switched off and under covers. Key Success Factors * Basic understanding of Ophthalmic Care modalities, therapies, terminology, medications and equipment. * Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat professional appearance. * Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, family of patients, doctors, and patients. * Requires flexibility to handle multiple ongoing tasks. * Must maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA guidelines. * Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: typing, information security, electronic medical documentation, hand held scanning and email.
