JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the Permit Technician Supervisor, the Permit Technician is responsible for performing technical and administrative support related to processing of building and other development-related permits for the Building Safety Division. This position serves as the primary point of contact for the public, contractors and design professionals, ensuring that permit applications are complete, accurate and processed in accordance with applicable building codes, supplements and procedures.

This individual will have a construction or development background with a basic understanding of the permitting process and the ability to guide and advise customers about the various stages of the process. This person must be innovative, dependable and relentlessly detail-oriented. The candidate must also have the proven ability to quickly move between diverse tasks with ease, and must thrive in a deadline-driven, professional environment.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Customer Service & Public Assistance
Receive and respond to inquiries by phone, email, and in person
Assisting customers at front counter with applications, payments, and general inquiries.
Providing information to contractors, homeowners, and the public regarding building codes, permitting processes, and inspection procedures.
Permit Application and document Processing
Reviewing, evaluating and approving permit applications and submitted documents for completeness and compliance.
Preparing and issuing building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits and certificates of occupancy.
Determine appropriate permit types and fees for building, re-roofing/siding, mechanical, plumbing and electrical permits.
Records & Data Management
Enter data and prepare a variety of records and reports.
Maintain statistical and financial reports involving plans reviewed, permits issued, inspections performed, valuations, refunds and all related data.
Maintaining and organizing physical and electronic filing systems, including scanning and retrieval of documents.
Financial Transactions & Reporting
Receive payments for building permits, sub-permits, re-inspection fees, and miscellaneous tasks at the front counter or by fax or mail.
Process payments and maintain related records.
Deposit monies and prepare balance reports for funds received and post amount to Treasurer's Office daily.
Complete and submit Census Bureau reports to appropriate agencies.
Administrative & Technical Support
Using Microsoft Office and permitting software for research, data entry, reporting and communication. Prepare correspondence, reports, and forms with accuracy and attention to detail. Perform a variety of technical and administrative duties using data-entry and file maintenance programs.
Maintain a supply of office supplies, forms and other administrative materials.
Ensure adherence to division policy and procedures.
Code Research & Compliance Support
Research issues related to building codes, permits and inspections.
Supporting inspectors and plans examiners by providing relevant information and documentation.
Assisting with interpretation and application of codes under the direction of supervisory staff.
