Description
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, NY, is seeking a Senior Staff Associate II to contrive, design, develop, optimize, and enhance complex data systems operated by the Lamont Geoinformatics Research Group (GRG). The SSAII will conduct research in a collaborative research environment to deliver innovative solutions for functions, capacity, interoperability, performance, and efficient maintenance of academic Earth Sciences data systems and services; operate and improve existing software and database solutions. Provide formal guidance to junior team members. Collaborate with other team members and with external peers to build consensus. Must exercise creativity and/or expertise in the normal performance of duties. Present at conferences and seminars; participate in development of funding proposals, manuscripts, and other research-oriented documentation.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
Contrive, design, develop, and optimize complex cloud-based architecture for data infrastructure and web applications that manage and provide access to research data. Work from product requirements developed by GRG project and product managers based on user scenarios and as approved by PI.
Plan and execute development, deployment, and administration of back-end infrastructure and front-end applications in a DevOps environment, working as part of the GRG Technical Team. Provide formal guidance to junior team members.
Participate in the development of funding proposals and manuscripts; present at conferences and seminars.
Maintain documentation of development and operational procedures and frameworks as part of the GRG DevOps environment.
Will exercise independent judgement and initiative. Receives general supervision from the Doherty Senior Research Scientist.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences or Engineering and 10 years of relevant experience in the development of scientific geoscience data systems. Proven track record of working with cloud-based architecture, particularly AWS (Amazon Web Services). Advanced knowledge of data modeling semantic web and database design, proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases technologies. Knowledge and experience of programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, PHP, etc. Knowledge and experience with web frameworks such as Angular, Next.js, Node.js, Django, Express.js, Spring. Knowledge and experience with API development skills. Knowledge and experience with container technologies, DevOps and CI/CD, Git/Version control. Familiarity with current trends in geoscience research and data system development. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Highly organized and efficient, excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge and experience with GIS system such as GeoServer, ArcGis.
The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled.
Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
