Company Overview

Grow Good Hawaii’s mission is to restore nature and to strengthen Hawaii’s food security by implementing community-based, agroecological solutions in urban areas. We work to connect upland nature with coastal ecosystems and the ocean in order to bring nature and abundance back from mauka to makai.

Company History

Grow Good Hawaii grew out of the Go Native: Growing a Native Hawaiian Urban Forest project initiated and led by Grow Good Hawaii founder Paul Arinaga. The Go Native project promotes the growing of native Hawaiian and “canoe” plants by Hawai‘i residents, businesses, civic organizations, and government institutions. The project published a book Go Native! Your guide to growing Native Hawaiian and canoe plants wherever you live, work, or play which helps gardeners, landscape architects, and others to identify the native plants most suitable to their climate zone, personal tastes, gardening experience, and other criteria, and provides landscape plans and combinations of plants that grow well together.

Grow Good Hawaii founder and executive director Paul Arinaga realized that urban areas can play an important role in restoring the flow of nature from mauka to makai. He also realized that food and conservation (“agroecology”) are intertwined. Approaches to increasing our food security and restoring nature can, therefore, be more integrated.

While continuing the Go Native Project, Grow Good Hawaii has embarked on another major initiative to establish or reinforce networks of backyard growers in Wai?anae and Waim?nalo, as well as promote residential-scale agroforestry. The "Trees for People: Growing an Urban Community Food & Native Forest" project is funded by a $5 million grant from the Urban & Community Forestry Program of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. Over the course of five years, the project will distribute 2,000 trees and facilitate a variety of programs for education, support, and community building.
