Description
This is an amazing opportunity to work in a state of the art, multidisciplinary pediatric facility. We work closely with referring physicians and other allied healthcare providers within the beautiful SSCY (Specialized Services for Children & Youth) Centre in Winnipeg. SSCY houses all of the major pediatric disability service providers in the province and has been in the works with the provincial government for over 20 years. The vision was to have a "one-stop-shop" for children with disabilities and complex medical needs.
Orthotic Client Demographic
- Commonly treated pathologies include CP, MD, Idiopathic toe walking, spina bifida, congenital club foot, SCI, Scoliosis (neuromuscular and AIS)
- Often work in conjunction with Botox, serial casting and orthopedic surgery programs
- AFO’s are most common device
- UE and Spine are typically semi-custom and we work with CFAB to produce
Position Overview:
Assessment, design, and fitting of orthotic devices. Attendance and consultation at clinics as required. Provide the public with the highest quality of care. Devices are fabricated and fit as expediently as possible within the time constraints of the department workload and requirements of the patient. Assure proper, comfortable fit and alignment of devices and make necessary modifications to maintain same.
Responsibilities:
- Communicate treatment plan and material selection to Technicians through comprehensive work order form.
- Attends appropriate clinics where they will assist in the formulation of an orthotic prescription in consultation with the physician and allied health team members.
- Determines the design and type of orthosis according to clinical patient assessment and the physician’s prescription. This includes:
- Casting, measuring, and cast modification. Using Vorum technology primarily.
- Fitting, alignment, routine follow-up, outcome documentation.
- Assure the proper fabrication of the orthosis by technical staff.
- Instruct patients in care and use of the device, and hygiene.
- Maintains adequate patient records in accordance with established standards.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current trends, techniques and practices and is able to pass this information on by explanation or demonstration to other members of the department and facility staff.
- Provide clinical teaching and supervision to orthotic residents, interns and students as required.
- Study current literature and attend conferences, seminars, etc. approved but the department administrative team (Manager and Director). Provide an information session for interested staff within one month following attendance at a course or conference.
- Participation on facility committees and work groups to support collaborative care environment and advance the RCC strategic plan.
- Provide family-centered, culturally proficient care.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Manager.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Certification as a Certified Orthotist, CO(c) with Orthotics Prosthetics Canada preferred, or enrollment in the Residency program with OPC.
- Member in good standing with Orthotics Prosthetics Canada.
- Member in good standing of the Manitoba Orthotics Prosthetics Association preferred.
- Previous experience in a pediatric clinical setting is an asset. Two to five years’ post-certification experience preferred.
- Experience with OPIE Software considered an asset.
- Experience with VORUM CAD-CAM technology considered an asset.
Hours of Work: 20 hours per week.
Salary: commensurate with qualifications and experience.
