Job Description:
Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Binghamton University seeks a Communications Manager (CM) within the Office of University Communications and Marketing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
As an integral member of the central communications team, the Communications Manager (CM) leads and manages daily/weekly tasks and longer-term projects to generate the identity and promote the work of the University and its schools, divisions, offices, and initiatives, to both external and internal audiences. We are looking for an organized, strategic writer who can balance daily communications and manage many other projects.
The CM works with deans, assistant deans, faculty, directors, and Communications and Marketing staff to determine the communication needs of the area to which the CM is assigned. In coordination with the Office of Communications and Marketing, the CM designs and implements both strategies and tactics. The CM serves as the project manager and point of contact for their assigned area's communications needs. This addresses communications problems in the most strategic, creative, and effective way possible in today's highly competitive environment.
Highlights of a CM's responsibilities:
- Write unique, cross-platform content for digital and print assets, including social media, websites, videos, infographics, multimedia presentations, and brochures.
- Write, edit, and coordinate feature stories for print and digital outlets. If project management is required for the project, the CM is responsible for this role.
- Work to identify stories that can be pitched to the media; work with faculty experts within the school/division to develop articles as required.
- Conceive, write, and coordinate website content and posting of content on the University website.
- Formulate social media strategies and tactics (particularly videos) to increase brand awareness and engagement in support of the University's social media and marketing goals. Work with CMs to develop these projects for all schools/divisions as needed.
- Stay updated on industry trends, social media tools, platform updates, and performance-tracking tools, and regularly share this information with the CM team.
- Provide ongoing communication consultation as requested by the VP of UCM or the director of communications.
- Work with Communications and Marketing team members to support programs with professional services such as photography, videography, writing, design, special events, media relations, and social media promotions.
- Work closely with the director of communications to obtain in-house assistance when appropriate and, when necessary, to negotiate with outside freelance help.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Effective writing, interpersonal and organizational skills
- Knowledge of content-management principles,
- Ability to edit templates within a CMS environment,
- Understanding of web publishing and the technical concepts involved in implementing web publishing solutions
- Ability to perform well under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Attention to detail
- Journalistic instincts
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in related field -OR- bachelor's degree with related work experience
- At least 3 years of editorial experience
- Experience monitoring and managing social media outlets for a business or institution
- A portfolio of professional work
Preferred:
- Higher-education experience
