The Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) is one of Australia's premier collaborative research facilities, supporting cutting-edge research across materials science, engineering, life sciences, quantum technologies, energy, resources and advanced manufacturing. Home to internationally recognised expertise and some of the nation's most sophisticated microscopy, imaging and microanalysis capabilities, the Centre enables discoveries that extend from biological systems to materials characterised at the atomic scale. As a foundation member of Microscopy Australia's Queensland node, CMM plays a critical role in Australia's national research infrastructure.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This is an exceptional opportunity to lead one of Australia's most advanced scientific research facilities at a time of significant opportunity and growth.
Reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure), you will provide strategic and academic leadership for the Centre while shaping its future direction, research capability and national profile. Leading a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you will oversee world-leading microscopy and microanalysis platforms, guide major infrastructure investment, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen partnerships across academia, government and industry.
You will champion research excellence, develop new funding opportunities, enhance national and international collaborations, and ensure the Centre continues to deliver outstanding scientific capability, education, training and service to researchers and industry alike.
This role offers the opportunity to influence research across multiple disciplines while positioning UQ at the forefront of global scientific discovery and innovation.
ABOUT YOU
You are an internationally respected academic leader with the vision, credibility and collaborative leadership style to guide a world-class research facility.
You will demonstrate:
- A PhD (or equivalent) together with an internationally recognised research profile in Science, Engineering or a closely aligned discipline.
- A strong track record leading complex research infrastructure, scientific facilities or major collaborative research environments.
- Demonstrated success securing significant competitive research funding and developing strategic investment opportunities.
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships across universities, research organisations, government and industry.
- Outstanding strategic leadership, financial management and organisational capability.
- A collaborative and inclusive leadership style with experience developing high-performing multidisciplinary teams.
- The ability to translate scientific capability into research impact, innovation and long-term institutional value.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and advocacy skills with a strong commitment to research excellence and collaboration.
