- Exhibits Manager
Description
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Exhibits Manager to oversee the planning, design, production, installation, and maintenance of exhibits within a museum environment. This position is responsible for managing all phases of exhibit development and ensuring exhibits are engaging, accessible, educational, and aligned with museum standards and curatorial objectives.
The ideal candidate is a highly organized project manager with strong leadership skills, experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and a passion for creating meaningful visitor experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage all phases of exhibit development, including concept design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and de-installation.
- Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams consisting of curators, designers, fabricators, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
- Develop and manage exhibit project budgets, schedules, timelines, and resources.
- Oversee requests for proposals (RFPs), bidding processes, contractor selection, and contract administration, including construction agreements, professional service agreements, and purchase orders.
- Translate curatorial concepts into functional, visually compelling, and visitor-centered exhibition spaces.
- Ensure exhibits comply with museum standards related to conservation, lighting, accessibility, and visitor safety.
- Participate in all stages of exhibit design, including concept development, storyboarding, technical drawings, material selection, and installation planning.
- Conduct research and remain informed on current museum and exhibition industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, and ongoing functionality of exhibit components, displays, and equipment.
- Support the development of educational and interpretive programming associated with exhibits.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, exhibition design, art history, architecture, visual arts, or a related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in exhibit design, production, or museum exhibition management.
- Experience managing complex projects and leading multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of exhibit design principles, interpretive planning, accessibility standards, lighting design, and conservation practices.
- Experience with digital and interactive exhibit technologies.
- Proficiency in budgeting, scheduling, and financial management for projects.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with 3D modeling and design software such as SketchUp, Rhino, 3ds Max, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- A portfolio showcasing exhibition design work for museums, galleries, or similar cultural institutions.
