Description
About Northern Trust:Northern Trust, a Fortune 500 company, is a globally recognized, award-winning financial institution that has been in continuous operation since 1889.

With more than 130 years of financial experience and over 22,000 partners, we serve the world's most sophisticated clients using leading technology and exceptional service.
Job Role:
We are seeking a technically hands-on Enterprise Architect who combines strong architecture expertise with practical engineering capability. This individual will operate as a player-coach, contributing directly to solution design and implementation - writing code, building automation, and enhancing AI-driven solutions.
This role is ideal for an architect who does not want to stay purely at the conceptual level, but instead actively participates in building, prototyping, and evolving enterprise solutions alongside engineering teams.
Requirements/Responsibilities
- Architecture + Engineering Execution
- Design and evolve enterprise architecture patterns across cloud, SaaS, and AI-enabled platforms
- Directly contribute to codebases where appropriate (e.g., APIs, automation, integrations, AI agents)
- Develop proofs-of-concept and reference implementations to validate architectural decisions
- AI & Automation Development
- Design, build, and enhance AI agents and copilots using modern frameworks (e.g., Azure OpenAI, Copilot Studio, LangChain, Semantic Kernel)
- Contribute to prompt engineering, orchestration logic, and integration patterns
- Automate enterprise governance and operational processes using tools such as Power Automate, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, or similar
- Platform & Integration Engineering
- Write and review code for APIs, microservices, and integration layers
- Build reusable services and automation pipelines that accelerate delivery teams
- Assist in debugging, performance tuning, and resolving complex technical issues
- Governance & Standards
- Define and enforce architecture standards while ensuring they are practical and implementable
- Partner with engineering teams to ensure alignment between architecture and delivery
- Introduce modern engineering practices (CI/CD, IaC, testing strategies) into enterprise workflows
- Collaboration & Leadership
- Act as a bridge between architecture and engineering teams
- Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentorship to developers and solution architects
- Engage with stakeholders to align technical solutions with business needs
- Programming & Development
- Proficiency in Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript
- Experience building APIs, services, and automation workflows
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices
- Cloud & Platforms
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
- Experience building and deploying cloud-native applications (containers, serverless, microservices)
- AI & Emerging Technology
- Practical experience building or integrating AI/ML or LLM-based solutions
- Understanding of agent-based architectures, prompt orchestration, and AI governance
- Ability to evaluate and apply emerging technologies in real-world enterprise contexts
- AI System & Agentic Workflows
- Design, build, and optimize agentic AI systems using modern agent frameworks (e.g., LangGraph, AutoGen, Haystack Agents, ReAct-style agents).
- Implement multi-agent collaboration patterns, task orchestration, memory architectures, tool integrations, and reasoning-enhancing strategies.
- Develop secure, robust, and scalable tool-calling and function-execution flows for agents operating in dynamic environments.
- Automation & Integration
- Experience with workflow automation tools (Power Automate, Logic Apps, etc.)
- Strong understanding of system integration patterns (REST, messaging, event-driven architecture)
- Enterprise Architecture
- Knowledge of architecture frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman) with a pragmatic, execution-focused mindset
- Experience defining architecture patterns, standards, and reusable design components
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Knowledge of enterprise architecture principles, patterns, and best practices, with familiarity in cloud computing and SaaS models.
- Excellent consultative and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with business, partner, and IT stakeholders.
- Certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect, AWS Architect, or TOGAF a plus
- Experience in financial services or other highly regulated environments
- Familiarity with governance, compliance, and risk frameworks (e.g., NIST, FFIEC, GDPR)
