NATIONAL PORTFOLIO ADVISOR

Responsible for providing comprehensive investment solutions and services to individuals, families and fiduciary mandates. Work is characterized by a high degree of complexity and sophistication and in a manner consistent with Wealth Management's Investment Philosophy. Works with Wealth Advisory partners to provide holistic advice and oversight of held away assets. Provides comprehensive and high-level custom reporting. Heavily involved across Wealth Management in sales process in ultra-high net worth advisory space, including sourcing, active calling, solutions development and complete sales process. Maintains ongoing contact with clients and promotes relationship enhancement opportunities in collaboration with relationship managers.
Major Duties:
Advises and/or coordinates investment activities across a national client base of complex high net worth personal clients and families.
2. Manages accounts that require complex decision making or special handling due to the nature of the relationship size, type of assets managed, sensitive client issues, and/or shared authority with outside attorneys/consultants.
3. Maintain consultative relationship providing advice on entire portfolio program, including assets where Northern Trust does not have investment discretion.
4. Utilize all available tools and resources to gain deep knowledge of entire investment universe, including alternative asset classes, in order to provide advice on full spectrum of investment strategies.
5. Develops, recommends, and directs the execution of programs designed to achieve investment objectives for accounts or family relationships. Programs are developed within the framework of Wealth Management's Investment Philosophy and Process as well as Northern Trust Investment Policy Committee guidance. May develop specialized portfolios of managed accounts for clients based on their needs and specifications.
6. Engages with appropriate internal partners to ensure that the purpose or intentions of the trust/ agency agreement is aligned with the proposed strategy and the level of investment authority granted to the trustee/agent is well understood.
7. Advises on the overall investment strategy of the trust/agency account with continuous revision of account objectives in context of changing client needs.
8. Maintains extensive national contact with personal trust advisors, wealth advisors and/or lead relationship managers, clients, co-trustees, consultants, and outside attorneys to ensure communication of trust/agency requirements and coordinate portfolio activity.
9. Collaborates with appropriate team members and Wealth Strategists and Senior Regional Management in the development of strategic client relationship development.
10. Represents the Corporation externally by presenting at advisor and client forums.
11. Maintains a current awareness of new investment strategies and instruments through regular engagement with the product and portfolio research area. Attends and actively participates at all internal educational forums.
12. Serves as appointed on standing investment services committee and on ad hoc unit committees as appropriate.
13. Ensures that Business objectives are being met and that are coordinated with Business Unit's and Corporate Strategic plan.
The successful candidate will benefit from having the following competencies:
- Minimum 15 years of investment and client relationship experience in which consistent long term job performance has met objectives. Advanced degree and related Industry qualification (e.g. CFA, CIMA, CAIA) is required.
- Strong knowledge of investment and portfolio management theory, accounting and financial principles, associated investment strategies and instruments, and characteristics of various marketplaces, usually acquired through formal education and work experience, are required to manage portfolios.
- Knowledge of investment terminology, the laws and regulations governing trust investments and taxation, as well as the bank's investment policies, procedures and strategies, usually acquired through work experience and formal education, is required to operate within the framework of trust documents.
- Analytical and sales skills are required to relate individual client asset situations to specific products. Interactive skills are required to comprehend prospect needs and respond with the appropriate solutions.
- Decision making, sales, and negotiating skills are required to guide sensitive or difficult situations through to agreement.
$205,700 - 360,100 USD
Salary range is a good faith estimate of base pay. Northern Trust provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement benefits (401k and pension), health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, spending accounts and disability), paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life & accident insurance, and other voluntary and well-being benefits. Northern Trust also provides a discretionary bonus program that may include an equity component.
